Target

Target is the eighth largest retailer in the U.S. ranked by annual sales, the sixth largest grocery retailer by ssaales and currently operates almost 2,000 stores nationwide. The Minneapolis-based retailer sells items through both its private label and other companies ranging from beauty to home goods to produce to vitamins.

Throughout its 60-year history, the discount retailer has always been known for its low prices. It was created as the discount arm of the Dayton Company, a department-store based in Minneapolis which remained its parent company until it was remained the Target Corporation in 2000.

In 2015, Target entered an agreement with CVS Pharmacy that allowed CVS to take over all Target pharmacies and operate them under the CVS name. The transaction was reported as being $1.9 billion.

Along with being a discount retailer, Target stores are almost always large-format though the company has tested other versions including a small format in urban areas and a SuperTarget with 50% more square footage than an average store.

Target’s food-based private label brands include: Good & Gather, Market Pantry, Sutton & Dodge, a premium meat line and Boots & Barkley, a pet food and supply line. The company has over a dozen other private label brands in other departments.

Target is consistently ranked in the Fortune 500 list of the top grossing companies in the U.S.
