Northgate Gonzalez Market’s all-embracing prepared food strategy caters to older generations, second- and third-generation “fusionistas,” and other foodies looking for authentic Mexican fare, such as this cena familiar de carnitas, a braised pork recipe the Gonzalez family brought to the U.S. when the store first opened in 1980.

Northgate’s popular cochinita pibil is a slow-roasted pork dish from the Yucatan that’s marinated in achiote and citrus, then wrapped in banana leaves and braised. The accompanying curtido sauce adds kick with pickled red onions, oregano and habaneros.
The 41-store Northgate chain offers eight to 12 different varieties of ceviche, representing different styles from various regions of Mexico. Each ceviche is sold through every day, so there’s no such thing as day-old ceviche in the market.
The Lip Lickin’ Rotisserie Chicken Pot Pie was an instant classic when introduced seven years ago, and the now mass-produced meals are available in nearly 750 Southeastern Grocers stores at Winn-Dixie, Bi-Lo and Harveys locations.
