IDDBA names 2016 Cake Challenge contestants

The International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association has identified the three retail cake decorators who will compete in the 21st annual Cake Decorating Challenge at the Dairy-Deli-Bake Seminar & Expo in Houston June 5-7.

This year’s contestants are: Nayeli Cruz, Vons, Carlsbad, Calif.; Paige Thornton, Green Valley Marketplace, Elkridge, Md.; and Sara Vanderheyden, Hy-Vee, Ames, Iowa. Vanderheyden previously competed in the Cake Challenge in 2010, when she came in third.

The Challenge takes place at the Show & Sell Center over the three days of the Expo. On the first day, contestants will decorate enough cakes to fill a multi-tiered, eight-foot bakery case. The second day is devoted to wedding cakes. On the final day of competition, contestants must decorate three cakes in the categories of special occasion, show theme and decorator’s choice.

Luke Bender, manager of technical service, Maplehurst Bakeries, and Jim Caliendo, dessert training specialist, Rich Products Corporation, will serve as this year’s judges.

Conference goers can also cast their votes for a daily People’s Choice Award.
