Supervalu Hires New Executives

Supervalu said it has named Steve Jungmann as its new executive vice president of merchandising, succeeding Duncan Mac Naughton, who left Supervalu in October to become chief merchandising officer at Wal-Mart Canada. MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu said it has named Steve Jungmann as its new executive vice president of merchandising, succeeding Duncan Mac Naughton, who left Supervalu in October to become chief merchandising officer at Wal-Mart Canada. Mac Naughton had been EVP of merchandising and marketing. Jungmann, 47, most recently was senior VP of consumer sales and marketing at Solo Cup Co., Highland Park, Ill., and before that was senior VP of sales at Spectrum Brands, another CPG company. Before joining Spectrum, Jungmann spent 20 years in a variety of positions at Kraft Foods. He will join Supervalu in early February and report to Craig Herkert, chief executive officer and president. Jungmann will lead all of the company's merchandising activities for its retail banners (excluding Save-A-Lot), including the private-label program. In addition, Supervalu said last week it has named Keith Wyche as the new president of its Cub Foods division. Wyche, 49, succeeds Brian Huff, who was promoted to senior VP of specialty retail last July. Wyche most recently was president of U.S. operations for Pitney Bowes' Pitney Management Services division. In a conference call discussing third-quarter results (see related story on this page), Supervalu also said Chuck Elias was named group vice president, strategic planning. Elias has held leadership positions at Home Depot and General Electric, Supervalu said.

BERÉ RETIRES FROM DOLLAR GENERAL

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General last week said David Beré, president and chief strategy officer, has decided to retire at the end of the company's current fiscal year, Jan. 29. Beré, an eight-year company veteran, had been president since 2006 and had briefly served as interim chief executive officer. Before joining the dollar-store chain, Beré had worked at several supplier companies, including stints as president and CEO of Bakery Chef and president and CEO of McCain Foods USA. He started his career at The Quaker Oats Co. He will continue to serve on the board of directors of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The company said it does not intend to replace Beré at this time. Rick Dreiling, CEO, will assume the duties of president.

FAMILY DOLLAR NAMES HAMBLEN SVP

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores said last week it has named Don Hamblen senior vice president, customer marketing. He will report to Dorlisa Flur, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer. Hamblen began his marketing career as a brand manager with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati. He most recently was chief marketing officer at Sears, and before that he headed the marketing department at Payless Shoesource.
