SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper Supermarkets here Friday joined others in a voluntary recall of infant formula Enfamil PREMIUM Newborn 12.5-ounce powder with number ZP1K7G on the bottom of the can. The product is made by Mead Johnson Nutrition, Glenville, Ill.
Wal-Mart Stores and Supervalu removed the product from the shelf this week after a report that a Missouri infant, who consumed the product, died from a rare bacterial infection.
In a press statement, Mead Johnson said, “The batch of the product used by the child’s family did not show the presence of the bacteria when it was produced and packaged, and that has recently been reconfirmed from our batch records. This product is not being recalled — nor is any other Mead Johnson product — but some retailers are removing it from their shelves as a precautionary measure.”
The Food and Drug Administration is testing the formula for the presence of the Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria that killed the infant, The Wall Street Journal reported. Another infant in the state survived after being infected by the bacteria after consuming an undisclosed brand of formula, according to reports.
A Mead Johnson spokesman told The New York Times that the company was confident its products are safe and nutritious when prepared, stored and used as instructed on the label.
