Data: Produce sales hampered by rising prices

Average weekly produce sales by volume trended downward during the second quarter of 2017, and high prices was the reason, according to the recently released FreshFacts on Retail Q2 2017.

The drop is driven by a weekly 4.4% drop in the volume of fruit sales, which outweighs a meager increase of 0.2% in vegetable volume. In fact, lower prices weren’t able to generate growth for some vegetables, including tomatoes and onions.

Overall, produce has slid 2.2% in volume despite seeing a nearly 1% climb in overall dollar sales per store. The category brought in $55,871 weekly per store.
