Big Y Has Big Plans for Safeway’s Eating Right Brand

Big Y plans to expand the presence of Safeway’s Eating Right brand in its stores, SN has learned. The health and wellness line started rolling out in December, and currently includes 64 items, including frozens, cereal, cookies, pasta and soup, Phill Schneider, Center Store vice president for Big Y, told SN. The line will grow to about 100 items come May.

SPRINGFIELD, Conn. — Big Y plans to expand the presence of Safeway’s Eating Right brand in its stores, SN has learned.

The health and wellness line started rolling out in December, and currently includes 64 items, including frozens, cereal, cookies, pasta and soup, Phill Schneider, Center Store vice president for Big Y, told SN. The line will grow to about 100 items come May.

The chain decided to offer the line after attending a fall presentation from Lucerne, a wholly owned subsidiary of Safeway that started marketing the line to other retailers and foodservice operations last year.

“Eating Right caught our eye because it states nutritional dietary needs in a simple, easy-to-understand way,” Schneider said.

Lucerne has not yet revealed what other retailers are carrying the line, but Schneider said Big Y is the first retailer in New England to get it. A representative from Lucerne was unavailable for comment.
