Food 4 Less Workers Authorize Strike

LOS ANGELES — Unionized employees at Food 4 Less here voted Thursday to authorize a strike if negotiations with Kroger Co., its Cincinnati-based corporate parent, are unsuccessful.

Kroger operates 104 Food 4 Less stores in Southern California, with an estimated 7,000 members. Its contract with Kroger expired last June, although negotiations did not begin until after the UFCW reached a contract settlement with the area's three major chains in September.

The UFCW said Food 4 Less workers sometimes earn as much as $3 less per hour than employees in comparable jobs at Ralphs, Kroger's other Southern California division. Though the UFCW is not seeking parity with the contract signed by Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons — the area's three major chains — a union spokesman said the offer Kroger made for Food 4 Less was not adequate.
