ISLEIN, N.J. — Foodtown here on Friday said it has created a new retail services division offering independent retailers with the benefits of a cooperative membership while retaining their own store banners.

Allegiance Retail Services will provide independent retailers — including Foodtown banners — with collective buying power; store operations and merchandising; advertising and marketing; IT support; more than 1,100 Foodtown private-label products; DSD support; and loyalty, gift card and payment card processing.

“We realized we had new opportunities with successful independent retailers who have developed their own brand identities, and could benefit from our flexible retail services platform,” Bill Donahoe, president and chief operating officer of Foodtown, said in a statement. “With Allegiance, we now have the opportunity to obtain greater sales and profits by leveraging our value proposition to various independent banners.”

David Maniaci, chairman and chief executive officer of Foodtown, will serve the same role for Allegiance.
