Fresh & Easy Sets Dec. 2 Fresno Debut

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, a division of United Kingdom-based Tesco, said it plans to open its northernmost California store in Fresno on Dec. 2, with three more Fresno locations scheduled to open on Jan. 13.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here, a division of United Kingdom-based Tesco, said it plans to open its northernmost California store in Fresno on Dec. 2, with three more Fresno locations scheduled to open on Jan. 13.

Two more stores are expected to open there by the end of February, including one in downtown Fresno, with six more Fresh & Easy locations scheduled to open later in 2010 and into 2011, the company said.

Tim Mason, chief executive officer of Fresh & Easy, said the downtown Fresno store will be part of a broader redevelopment program to revitalize the downtown area. Fresno, usually considered the dividing line between Southern and Northern California, is 75 miles north of the chain's northernmost California store to date, in Delano, Calif.

The company has said it plans to move into the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento area in the next couple of years.

Fresh & Easy operates 130 stores in Southern California, Phoenix and Las Vegas.
