NEW YORK — FreshDirect is staying here after all. The Internet grocer on Tuesday said it would proceed with a $112.6 million new headquarters operations center in the Bronx, and not move to New Jersey.
City and state agencies said they would provide incentives that would cover the entire investment over a 25-year period.
The new facility retains 2,000 existing jobs and would create almost 1,000 new jobs, city and state officials said. The construction of the new facility will also result in the creation of approximately 684 construction jobs in the city and an overall economic impact to the city of nearly $255 million.
“Making sure that companies like FreshDirect can grow and invest in New York City is a key part of our strategy to rebuild and diversify our economy,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in a statement. “A thousand new jobs at the Harlem River Yards is great news for the Bronx and a welcome boost to our city’s economy.”
As reported previously in SN, city resources devoted to FreshDirect include $74 million in tax exemptions and $9.5 million for equipment to be used at the facility. The state is providing $18.9 million in tax credits and up to $1 million for the purchase of electric vehicles for use at the facility, among other grants and incentives.
