MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills has committed to sourcing one million eggs from hens that aren't caged, according to The Humane Society of the United States. The pledge comes after the company vowed to move all the eggs in its Haagen-Dazs product line in Europe to cage-free.
"When manufacturers like General Mills switch to cage-free eggs, hens have a dramatically better life," said HSUS spokesman Josh Balk.
The Washington-based nonprofit works to convince food manufacturers, restaurant chains, grocery stores, food service operators, hospitals and universities to make the cage-free switch. Unilever recently adopted a policy to convert all of the eggs it sources to cage-free, including 350 million used annually by Hellmann's mayonnaise.
The company is publicizing the move on packaging, and in newspaper and television ads.
