GS1 DataBar Deadline Pushed to 2011

The final implementation step of the GS1 DataBar on coupons, originally scheduled for January 1, 2010, will be deferred until January 1, 2011, the Grocery Manufacturers Association announced here yesterday.

WASHINGTON — The final implementation step of the GS1 DataBar on coupons, originally scheduled for January 1, 2010, will be deferred until January 1, 2011, the Grocery Manufacturers Association announced here yesterday.

The decision was made after feedback collected by the GMA, through the Joint Industry Coupon Committee, revealed that retailers would not have the necessary equipment and POS software in place in time for the earlier deadline.

Once implemented, the GS1 DataBar will allow manufacturers to develop more robust offers. Retailers will benefit from improved scan rates, increased checkout speed and automatic expiration date checking, according to the GMA.

“Despite the deferred implementation position of the committee, the JICC encourages retailers to proceed with implementation of the GS1 DataBar as soon as they are ready and not wait until the 2011 date,” said Stephen Sibert, GMA senior vice president of industry affairs, in a statement. “Early adoption will help ensure the smoothest transition possible and allow manufacturers and retailers to fulfill our shared mission of serving consumers quickly and efficiently.”

After expressing its support of deferring implementation in June, GMA solicited comments about the idea. The JICC includes representatives from GMA, Food Marketing Institute, National Grocers Association and National Association of Chain Drug Stores, as well as individuals from retailers and manufacturers who oversee coupon programs.
