IGA Opens First Store in Guam

IGA said it opened its first store over the weekend in Guam — a 25,000-square-foot supermarket re-named Island Fresh IGA.

CHICAGO — IGA here said it opened its first store over the weekend in Guam — a 25,000-square-foot supermarket re-named Island Fresh IGA.

The store, located in Chalan Pago and formerly called Hita Supermarket, has been owned since late 2007 by the Cost-U-Less division of The North West Co., Winnipeg, Manitoba, which invested $3 million to upgrade the facility. It will be supplied by the Tacoma, Wash., division of Supervalu, Minneapolis.

Thomas Haggai, chairman, president and chief executive officer of IGA Global, said the alliance has been trying to open a store in Guam for the past 15 years, "but distribution was such that we were unable to move forward on the island."
