TORONTO — Loblaw Cos. will open a grocery store at the ground floor of Maple Leaf Gardens, the famed hockey arena in downtown Toronto that the retailer acquired in 2004.

The store is one part of a $60 million ($57.4 million U.S.) renovation of the arena, which will also include a new ice rink and athletic facilities for Ryerson University, officials said Monday. The project, which is also receiving $20 million (Canadian) from the federal government, is expected to open in March 2011.

Maple Leaf Gardens was home of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team from 1931 to 1999.
