SAN JOSE, Calif. — Mi Pueblo Food Center here said it plans to open the first and only full-service supermarket in East Palo Alto on Saturday – the first supermarket to open in the densely populated, low-income community in 23 years, according to Perla Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the 13-store chain.
The community has several smaller mom-and-pop stores, but the nearest supermarket is at least five miles away, she told SN.
The store will be a 35,000-square-foot supermarket located in a former Circuit City that has been vacant for at least a year. East Palo Alto has a largely Hispanic population, with large numbers of African-Americans and Pacific Islanders, Rodriguez said.
As at all of its stores, Mi Puelbo will offer free shuttle service to drive customers home, she added.
