NEW YORK — City health officials here yesterday confirmed six new cases of salmonella linked to contaminated tomatoes. New Hampshire’s Department of Health and Human Services also announced that state’s first outbreak victim yesterday, bringing the total number of affected consumers to almost 300 in 28 states. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is still searching for the source of the outbreak, but has said that the illness is most likely linked to raw Roma and round tomatoes. In addition, Dr. David Acheson, associate commissioner for foods at the FDA, last week said the agency expected traceback to eventually lead to growers in either Mexico or parts of South Florida, where tomato season begins earliest.
