New Carts Roll Out at Hannaford

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets has rolled out new shopping carts that are deeper, but slimmer than the older ones.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets has rolled out new shopping carts that are deeper, but slimmer than the older ones.

The basket capacity is 9,000 cubic inches, down from 9,100, Hannaford announced in a post on its Facebook page. Hannaford’s post was in response to a customer complaint that the new carts seem smaller.

“I shop for a family of 5 and have always been able to fit my order in a single cart. Struggled to fit everything in today and then needed 2 carts to take the order to my car,” the shopper wrote on Facebook. “I have been a loyal customer for many years, I have survived the recent remodel and store brand package change, but the new carts are pushing me over the edge.”

Hannaford responded that the prototype carts were rolled out after customer surveys and store tests showed they would be received well.

“Mostly, the difference is that the baskets are deeper, rather than wider,” Hannaford wrote. “We hope you give them another chance.”
