Private Liquor Sales on Wash. Ballot

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — A ballot measure seeking to privatize liquor sales in Washington state, sponsored by Costco Wholesale Corp. here, has qualified for the state's fall ballot.

The measure calls for closing state liquor stores and selling the assets, including the state's liquor distribution center, after which the state would license the distribution and sale of spirits. Under terms of the proposed measure, wholesale pricing would no longer be uniform.

Sponsors of the initiative, who were required to submit a minimum of 241,153 signatures to qualify it for the ballot, collected 361,339, according to the Secretary of State's office.
