LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets has launched a test of curbside pick-up service at a store in Atlanta and plans to expand it to an additional store in Tampa, Fla., shortly.

The service allows shoppers to select items on the Internet and pick them up at the store for a charge of $7.99, according to the retailer. The service is currently available at Publix’s Toco Hills store in Atlanta, with another location in Tampa set to launch soon, according to the Publix.com/curbside website.

Curbside shoppers can select items to shop for at the website and select a pick-up time. According to a schedule posted on the website, most orders would be ready for pickup within four hours.

Publix several years ago shut down its Publix Direct Internet shopping site, saying that the service, though well-liked by customers, was not profitable. A spokeswoman for Publix told the Tampa Tribune newspaper that the curbside service would be operated for a year, after which Publix would review results.
