WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Raley's Supermarkets here said Friday its customers have selected five community projects to which the chain will donate grants of $7,500 each as part of a vendor promotion with PepsiCo.

Raley's said over 211,000 votes were cast for more than 400 different projects. To qualify, projects had to meet criteria in one of three areas: Improving the lives of children under 18; creating healthy communities and a healthier planet; or celebrating the arts.

The winners were a landscape and yard beautification program at a charter school in Modesto, Calif; an international studies program in Sacramento that makes high school students eligible to teach at an orphanage in Mexico; installation of sports and fitness equipment at an elementary school in Redding; the purchase of books by a library in Sacramento to encourage reading among English- and non-English-speaking students; and creation of a visual- and performing-arts venue for a local school district in Sacramento.
