ARLINGTON, Va. — The Retail Industry Leaders Association here yesterday commended Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., for calling a hearing of the congressional subcommittee that he chairs to address the growing issue of organized retail crime. The hearing, before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, will take place on Sept. 22 and will address the Organized Retail Crime Act of 2008 (H.R. 6491) and the E-Fencing Enforcement Act of 2008 (H.R. 6713). “For too long, criminals have exploited antiquated laws and the anonymity of the Internet to sell goods that are not only stolen, but could harm consumers,” said RILA Vice President of Asset Protection Paul Jones, in a statement. Introduced by Rep. Brad Ellsworth, D-Ind., and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the Organized Retail Crime Act of 2008 would amend federal criminal code, making it illegal to engage in activities that further organized retail crime. The E-Fencing Enforcement Act of 2008, introduced by Scott, tackles the selling of stolen goods online.
