PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here announced yesterday that it was named one of 2009’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute, a business ethics group. Trader Joe’s, Monrovia, Calif., was also on the list.
Ethisphere evaluated more than 10,000 companies and named 99 finalists. The ranking includes: reviewing of codes of ethics; litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluation of investment in innovations and sustainable practices; and activities designed to improve corporate citizenship.
Other companies making the list included suppliers Unilever, Danone, General Mills, Kellogg’s, PepsiCo, S.C. Johnson & Sons, and StonyField Farm; retailers Target Corp., Gap, Best Buy, Ikea, and Marks & Spencer and foodservice operators Starbucks and McDonalds.
