Smith's Wins Energy Award

SALT LAKE CITY — Smith's Food & Drug Stores here, a division of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., has received the Outstanding Leadership in Energy and Conservation Award from the Utah Association of Energy Users.

According to published reports, the chain was recognized for retrofitting its 132 stores in seven states with more efficient energy systems for heating, cooling, water, lighting and recycling. The chain also converted frozen food cases from fluorescent to LED lighting.

According to Steve Peacock, vice president, energy management, "Smith's is committed to being a responsible steward of the environment and has found that a combination of preventative maintenance and new technology has a major impact on reducing energy consumption."
