GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — In commemoration of Earth Day, all D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Felpausch, Glen’s and VG’s stores will give away free reusable bags to their first 100 customers Wednesday, according to Spartan Stores here, which operates the chains. Additional reusable bags can be purchased for 99 cents.
Reusable bags can hold up to three times more groceries than plastic bags, Spartan said. If each consumer used their free bag at least once a week, more than 1.5 million fewer bags will enter landfills per year, according to Spartan Stores.
“We want to make it easier for our customers to make more environmentally friendly decisions,” Alan Hartline, executive vice president merchandising, said in a statement. “If we can get more customers shopping with reusable bags, collectively we can make a big difference.”
