LOS ANGELES — Unified Grocers here said it has selected Superior Grocers, a 36-store chain based here, as the recipient of the 2011 Ben Schwartz Retail Grocery Visionary Award.
The award, named for the former chairman of Unified, is given annually to an independent grocery company that is a leader and innovator in the industry; it also recognizes retailers who have consistently demonstrated, through practice and example, initiative, creativity and leadership wtihin their business and have inspired others in the industry to think and act creatively and passionately.
In presenting the award Al Plamann, Unified's chief executive officer, noted that Superior opened its first store in 1981 "and has been growing steadily ever since. Such tremendous growth in a relatively short period of time is a remarkable achievement, and it is one of the reasons why Superior is the recipient of the award."
Another reason, Plamann said, is the company's dedication and commitment to providing its customers with a strong value proposition — "a focus on quality, value and service that creates great reatail organizations," he noted.
