Supervalu to Increase Sustainable Seafood

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu plans to expand the sustainable sourcing of its wild-caught seafood by 2015, the retailer announced in a statement on Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu plans to expand the sustainable sourcing of its wild-caught seafood by 2015, the retailer announced in a statement on Thursday.

Supervalu, who has collaborated with the Marine Stewardship Council for the past year, will entirely source its top 20 wild-caught seafood products "from sustainable fisheries or those on a clear pathway to sustainability by 2015," the retailer said.

The seafood will come from fisheries certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, as well as from World Wildlife Fund Fishery Improvement Projects, which Supervalu has pledged to support.

"By sourcing our products from sustainable fisheries, as well as supporting fishery improvement projects, we are helping ensure sustainable seafood for generations to come," said Chris Hooks, Supervalu vice president of meat, seafood, dairy and frozen Foods, in a written statement.

Supervalu's announcement follows a growing trend of retailers embracing sustainably sourced seafood. Kroger released a similar seafood sustainability plan with the World Wildlife Fund in early April.
