Three Grocery Co-Ops in Top 10

Three cooperative grocery wholesalers were among the top 10 cooperative businesses of any kind in the nation in 2009, according to a report by NCB.

WASHINGTON — Three cooperative grocery wholesalers were among the top 10 cooperative businesses of any kind in the nation in 2009, according to a report issued Wednesday by NCB here.

NCB — formerly National Cooperative Bank — cited Wakefern Food Corp., Keasby, N.J.; Associated Wholesale Grocers, Kansas City, Kan.; and Unified Grocers, Commerce, Calif., as Nos. 3, 5 and 7, respectively, on its annual list of the top 100 cooperative businesses in the country.

No. 1 on the list was CHS Inc., an agricultural co-op based in Saint Paul, Minn. The total revenues of all 100 co-ops on this year's list was down slightly in 2009, to $175.6 billion.

Ten other co-op grocery wholesalers appeared on the list: Associated Wholesalers Inc., Robesonia, Pa. (No. 14); Associated Food Stores, Salt Lake City (No. 22); Central Grocers Cooperatve, Franklin Park, Ill. (No. 23); Affiliated Foods Midwest, Norfolk, Neb. (No. 32); Affiliated Foods Inc., Amarillo, Texas (No. 38); URM Stores, Spokane, Wash. (No. 49); Piggly Wiggly Alabama, Bessemer, Ala. (No. 55); Associated Grocers, Baton Rouge, La. (No. 68); Associated Grocers of Florida, Pompano Beach, Fla. (No. 84); and Key Food Stores, New York (No. 96).
