WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets here said Wednesday it has reached an agreement with Syracuse University to be “the major sponsor” of the university’s football, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse programs for the next two seasons. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The sponsorship announcement follows Tops’ acquisition of former Penn Traffic stores throughout the central New York region earlier this year.
“We have a special opportunity in the new neighborhoods we serve in Central New York to not only provide a better shopping experience to our customers, but to also make significant and lasting contributions in the community,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and chief executive officer. “We are excited to be able to show our support through the partnership we have created with Syracuse University athletics, and we look forward to showing enthusiastic Orange fans what Tops has to offer.”
Tops will offer shoppers related contests and special ad-driven promotions, and will also sponsor in-game promotions tied to the Tops BonusCard, through which customers can win prizes, including tickets to games and Tops gift cards. Shoppers will also be able to take advantage of discounted ticket programs.
The chain will also work with the Food Bank of Central New York through tie-ins like “Touchdowns for Turkeys", “Jams for Slams” and “Bins for Wins.” Tops will also sponsor a Family Corner, a special alcohol-free section at the Carrier Dome.
