LOS ANGELES — Unified Grocers here said it has named Town & Country Markets the winner of the 2010 Ben Schwartz Retail Grocery Visionary Award.

Town & Country operates six stores in the Seattle metropolitan area. The award is named for the former chairman and longtime director of Unified. It is given annually to an operator who is a leader and innovator in the industry and who, through practice and example, has consistently demonstrated initiative, creativity and leadership within their businesses and inspired others to think and act creatively and with passion in the grocery field.

Al Plamann, Unified president and chief executive officer, said Town & Country has been consistently innovative over the years by implementing new ideas that have since become standard, including the launch in 1995 of a Central Market format that embraced a fresh and healthy foods concept and became a destination store for consumers.
