MINNEAPOLIS — Yoplait yogurt will cease using milk from cows treated with rBGH or other artificial bovine growth hormones by August this year, the company announced yesterday.
Brand owner General Mills, based here, said it was making the change in response to consumer demand, and not out of concerns for product safety, according to the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal. The brand is the latest to ask its milk suppliers to cease using the hormones, which boost milk production.
The hormones were declared safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the early 1990s, but have come under fire from consumer advocacy and food activism groups, who argue that traces of the hormones are harmful to human health.
