SEAFOOD CHOICES ALLIANCE TO HOST SUMMIT

BARCELONA, Spain — In a reflection of the global nature of the seafood business, as well as the international efforts needed to make sustainable fisheries programs effective, the Seafood Choices Alliance is hosting its annual Seafood Summit here Jan. 27-30, 2008. The four-day conference at the Gran Hotel Princesa Sofia will feature educational sessions on topics such as the development of organic aquaculture standards, seafood traceability, credible eco-labeling programs, the global aquaculture performance index and sustainable sourcing policies. Confirmed speakers and panelists will include executives from European retailers such as ASDA and Sainsbury's, as well as academics, officials from the Culinary Institute of America and leaders from conservation groups such as the Marine Stewardship Council and the Global Aquaculture Alliance. “We're working throughout the seafood supply chain, both with wild fisheries and in aquaculture with business and conservation groups,” Valerie Craig, senior project manager for the Seafood Choices Alliance, told SN. The group's website, www.seafoodchoices.com, includes links to help distributors, retailers and restaurant owners source from fishermen and suppliers that have been certified sustainable, and provides consumers with a way to search for sustainable seafood restaurants and retailers by ZIP code.
