Fresh & Easy Same-Store Sales Moderate

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here said same-store sales grew 3.6% in the first fiscal quarter — the lowest rate of growth since the chain was established in 2007.

Philip Clarke, chief executive officer of Tesco, Fresh & Easy's United Kingdom-based parent company, said the U.S. operation "maintained a positive sales momentum despite seeing a moderation in its like-for-like growth rate as it annualizes three years of strong sales progress."

The company said Fresh & Easy's total sales were up 19.1% for the quarter, which ened May 26. Tesco does not release specific dollar figures in quarterly reports.

Clarke said Fresh & Easy is "gearing up for its biggest-ever change of range in a few weeks' time."

Brendan Wonnacott, director of communications for the chain here, told SN the change involves the introduction of 159 new fresh prepared meals and the rearrangement of that offering on the stores' back wall, with the top shelf devoted to single meals; the next shelves down devoted to appetizers and sandwiches; and the bottom shelf devoted to entrees.
