Safeway operates out of several buildings, but most of the action takes place here at the official headquarters at 5918 Stoneridge Mall Road in Pleasanton, Calif.
Healthful foods are subsidized at the corporate cafe, while junk foods are not. There are five hot food stations, including one devoted to vegetarian eating, and two salad bars.
To get the healthful diet message across, the cafe utilizes signage urging employees to make smart choices. Here, a plaque at the one of the salad bars extols the virtues of anti-inflammatory greens.
Safeway’s private-label products are used throughout the cafe, but almost all of them come from the chain’s natural/organic lines. An easy choice is the “O” Organics olive oil found at the salad bar.
The cafe also makes its own organic nutrition bar. The grain-based snack is made fresh daily and sold along with other snacks near the cash registers.
A building adjacent to the headquarters is home to the company fitness center. The 17,000-square-foot facility opened in 2007, and today hosts approximately 100 classes a month.
Fitness classes, led by trained instructors, are held throughout the day. Here, a late-morning class gets put through its paces.
Employees who find that spinning or Pilates hold little appeal can hit the weights at any of the center’s fitness equipment stations.
