Hannaford Bros. earned a Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for this store in Augusta, Maine. Fred Conlogue, the chain’s director of design services, reports that the store’s sustainability extends well beyond the LEED construction initiative and inspired a new type of thinking throughout the organization.

The store uses closed-door cases on all of its refrigeration units...
...and reminds customers why.
Night shades help conserve energy on open cold cases.
The Augusta location makes extensive use of natural light through skylights and other systems.
A bird’s-eye view at the building’s skylights also shows the rooftop garden (next photo).
The 7,000-foot rooftop garden contains low-maintenance plants, which help insulate the store and reduce runoff.
The Hannaford Bros. supermarket has reserved parking for fuel-efficient vehicles.
