Weis Markets kicks off DoorDash delivery

Launch marks Mid-Atlantic grocer’s second third-party delivery partner

Weis Markets has added DoorDash as another third-party partner for on-demand grocery delivery.

Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis said Friday that DoorDash same-day delivery service is now available at more than 170 stores across its Mid-Atlantic market area via the DoorDash online marketplace and mobile app. Customers receive their grocery order in an hour, on average.

Weis is offering more than 47,000 items through DoorDash, including fresh meat and seafood, fresh produce, dairy, snacks and center-store groceries.

In addition, Weis customers also can sign up for DoorDash’s DashPass membership program. For eligible orders of $25 or more, Weis members get $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees from thousands of restaurants, grocery, and convenience stores nationwide.

“We’re committed to bringing our customers a strong combination of convenience and value every day,” Ron Bonacci, vice president of advertising and marketing at Weis Markets, said in a statement. “This partnership expands online shopping and delivery options available to customers and offers them the convenience of shopping a wide variety of the high-quality Weis Markets products they trust within the DoorDash app.”

Weis Markets currently offers online grocery delivery and pickup service through its own service, Weis 2 Go, and same-day delivery via third-party provider Shipt at most stores. The company began its partnership with Shipt, a subsidiary of Target Corp., in September 2018.

Overall, Weis operates 197 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia. The DoorDash service currently isn’t available via Weis in Virginia.

“As consumer expectations for convenience and accessibility increase, we are excited to partner with Weis Markets to bring their extensive selection of groceries to customers’ doorsteps on-demand throughout the mid-Atlantic region,” commented Shanna Prevé, vice president of strategic partnerships and business development at DoorDash.

Known primarily for restaurant food delivery, San Francisco-based DoorDash officially announced its entry into the grocery retail market in August 2020. The company previously provided grocery retailers only with last-mile delivery of groceries and meals through its white-label DoorDash Drive service, in which retail partners fielded, picked and packed the orders. Now DoorDash offers an end-to-end online grocery marketplace solution, encompassing ordering, fulfillment and delivery.
