CALEDONIA, Michigan — A picture posted to social media of a cake decorated at a grocery store has gone viral for a surprising — and heartwarming reason.

Lisa Aldrich said on Facebook that she went to a Meijer grocery store in Michigan over the weekend to get a cake for someone’s birthday. While there, she said she asked a “bakery-looking” employee to decorate it with a birthday message.

The employee did, and Aldrich took it to the checkout line without really looking at it.

“After looking, I nervously laughed and headed to check out. It didn’t really matter to me that it looked so bad,” wrote Aldrich.

Aldrich said employees offered to make her a new one, but she stuck with the one she had.

Then, Aldrich discovered who had decorated it for her.

“To my surprise, after they discussed it, one cashier put her arm on my shoulder and said ‘the girl who wrote that has autism. Thank you for smiling and thanking her. Even though she’s not supposed to write on cakes, you probably made her day.' So I guess the moral of the story is that kindness is important!” Aldrich wrote on Facebook.

Aldrich’s post is public and has been shared thousands of times.



Brian Calley, the lieutenant governor of Michigan, even retweeted an image of the cake sent to him over Twitter.

Aldrich later wrote on Facebook that she had received thanks from more than 100 people who have a loved one with autism.

“Be nice. That is all,” wrote Aldrich. “I can’t believe how awesome God is that he is using this story to bless so many people! God is so, so good.”

Aldrich’s profile says she is a worship leader at Ada Bible Church in Ada Township, Michigan.
