ShopRite fried chicken goes antibiotic-free

Chain expands line of better-for-you meal solutions

ShopRite is now taking a better-for-you approach with its ready-to-eat fried chicken.

The Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic supermarket chain said it has converted its eight-piece, grab-and-go fried chicken to an antibiotic-free offering. Developed with Perdue Farms, the chicken is marketed under the ShopRite Kitchen brand, with the label sporting a “No Antibiotics Ever!” (NAE) yellow flag and the Perdue logo.

Made fresh daily, ShopRite Kitchen NAE fried chicken is hand-breaded and cooked in trans-fat free oil. The chicken, also available in a drumsticks-and-thighs pack, is raised cage-free, according to ShopRite.

In the Potluck Blog on its website, ShopRite features recipe and meal ideas for the NAE fried chicken, including Southern Chicken and Waffles, Fried Chicken Game Day Spread and Leftover Fried Chicken Buffalo Chicken Salad.

ShopRite noted that the NAE fried chicken is part of its effort to serve up convenient and healthier meal solutions. Last April, the grocery chain launched no-antibiotics Perdue rotisserie chicken products    under the ShopRite Kitchen NAE banner. Items include whole rotisserie chicken, roaster breast and roaster leg quarters. The chicken is raised entirely without antibiotics on an all-vegetarian diet.

The products are priced at or below most conventional rotisserie and fried chicken offerings, according to ShopRite.

Part of the Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp. supermarket cooperative, the ShopRite grocery banner spans 274 stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.
