Deflation and the weak economy took its toll on the Top 75 North American food retailers, as six of the 10 largest retailers saw their volumes decline. In addition, bankruptcies knocked other chains off the list, such as Penn Traffic Co. and Bruno’s. Many mid-sized firms that had been seeking to recover from reorganizations slipped several spots on the list, including Bi-Lo, Bashas’ and Marsh Supermarkets.
