This year the Top 75 list showed the recovery that food retailers made in sales volume over the prior year, with total volume for all companies on the list up about 7.7%. Costco Wholesale Corp., No. 3 on the list, closed the gap on No. 2, Kroger Co., which remained behind Wal-Mart Stores. Wal-Mart’s U.S. and Canadian volume was estimated at about $311 billion, nearly four times that of Kroger.
