CHICAGO -- IGA here said yesterday it will launch its first-ever Hometown Family Meals promotion -- an in-store marketing program designed to encourage families to share meals together. The event, which is scheduled to run April 22 through May 5, will offer the opportunity for two families to win weekly family meals for a year, awarded in the form of 52 IGA gift certificates each worth $50. Besides tying in with the national event, IGA retailers are being asked to develop their own in-store programs, which could encompass special deals on take-home prepared meals or essay contests where winners get to appear in a local IGA commercial. The national event will also offer savings on featured products from brand-name sponsors, IGA said. "When retailers mount the family meals event, they have a great opportunity to impact the quality of life of families,” said Jim Walz, senior director of branding and business development for IGA. “To be truly effective, our marketing events need to be memorable promotions that will differentiate IGA retailers from their competitors and provide some platform for bettering the community. The family meals theme does that." -- Elliot Zwiebach
