Albertsons to close original Florida location

Albertsons told state authorities that it would close its store in Clearwater, Fla., next month.

The store, which will close May 28, is one of four Albertsons stores still operating in Florida, and was the first Albertsons ever in Florida, according to an independently published history of the chain's local stores.

The Boise, Idaho-based retailer also operates Albertsons stores in Oakland Park, East Largo and Altamonte Springs.

Albertsons, at one time operator of more than 100 locations in the Sunshine State, sold 49 Florida locations to Publix in 2008 and has been gradually closing stores since. The Clearwater store opened for the first time in October 1974 under the Skaggs-Albertsons banner.

The company said 86 employees would be affected by the closing.
