C&S acquires Hawaiian food distributor

C&S Wholesale Grocers said Thursday that its wholly owned subsidiary Hawaiian Housewares has signed an asset purchase agreement to acquire the operations of Edsung Foodservice Co. in Honolulu.

The sale is expected to close in late April 2016, at which point the Edsung business will be consolidated into the Hansen Distribution Group, a division of Keene, N.H.-based C&S, providing operational efficiencies, increased purchasing power and product breadth, and opportunities for continued growth.

Edsung was founded in 1946 by Sungdai Choi as a family-owned broadline foodservice distributor. Servicing all of Hawaii, the company specializes in bakery and restaurant supplies.

“Edsung and the Choi family have maintained a very loyal customer base with their high-service business model and strong customer partnerships,” Rick Cohen, C&S chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “We are committed to maintaining Edsung’s distinctive ‘Service with Aloha’ as we welcome the employees and customers into the C&S family.”
