Schnucks winds down Shop ‘n Save conversions

Rest of acquired stores set to open doors this week

Schnuck Markets Inc. tomorrow plans to begin reopening the remaining 11 of the 20 Shop ‘n Save stores in the St. Louis area that it purchased from Supervalu Inc.

All of the stores, located in Missouri and Illinois, are being converted to the Schnucks banner. Nine supermarkets were reopened last week.

Plans call for supermarkets to open on Oct. 17 in O’Fallon (Mexico Loop Road East) and St. Louis (Lemany Ferry Road), Mo., and Wood River, Ill.; on Oct. 19 in O’Fallon (Monticello Plaza) and St. Louis (South Lindbergh Boulevard), Mo., and East Alton and Belleville, Ill.; and on Oct. 21 in Festus, Mo., and Alton and Edwardsville, Ill., on Oct. 21. A stand-alone pharmacy in Union, Mo., will reopen under the Schnucks banner on Oct. 19.

“We’ve seen with our first round of openings that customers are eager to return to their neighborhood stores as quickly as possible, and we’re just as eager to welcome them to Schnucks,” Dave Peacock, president and chief operating officer of St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets, said in a statement. “We want to thank the local leaders in each of the municipalities for working with us to make these quick turnarounds possible.”

In the Shop ‘n Save store conversions, Schnucks is changing out point-of-sale systems, rebranding signage and restocking merchandise. The retailer said more extensive remodels of the stores are upcoming.

Schnucks plans to hold a ribbon-cutting event to mark the reopening of all 20 stores at the newly acquired Fenton, Mo., store on Oct. 22.

The new locations will boost Schnucks’ store count to 118 supermarkets (including 110 in-store pharmacies) and one freestanding pharmacy in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. Currently with 99 stores, the chain is slated to open a new supermarket in Warrenton, Mo., later this fall.

The transaction with Supervalu also includes four Shop ‘n Save fuel stations. Schnucks said that an opening date for the Wood River fuel center hasn’t been set yet as it continues to evaluate operating requirements.
