Safeway plans to lay off 91 employees at a division office in Clackamas this spring, job cuts triggered by its pending merger with Albertsons.

The layoffs will occur over two weeks beginning March 31, according to a letter from the company sent to the state.

Safeway and Albertsons agreed to a $9.2 billion combination last March, aiming to strengthen their businesses to compete with big-box rivals like Walmart and warehouse clubs like Costco.

In December, the two stores said they will sell 168 stores to gain antitrust regulators' approval for their merger. The Bellingham, Washington grocery chain Haggen is buying 20 Oregon stores, including locations in Beaverton, Tigard and Lake Oswego.

Correction: This article has been corrected to remove reference to a Safeway district office. A Safeway employee said that the layoff site is a division office.
