Sobeys introduces seafood in cook-at-home bags

To appeal to seafood-loving customers who don’t want to handle fish themselves, Sobeys’ seafood counters will now pack seafood in ready-to-cook bags.

Called Seafood Steamers, the bags contain the customer’s choice of seafood and seasoned butter — available in lemon and dill, garlic and parsley or salted — and can be cooked in the oven or microwave.

“Many Canadians like to eat seafood, but they may lack the confidence to properly prepare it, or they avoid fish because of the mess,” Bryon Feener, senior director, meat and seafood merchandising and commercial programs, said in a press release. “While cooking a fish dinner may be intimidating for many people, the Seafood Steamer takes the fuss out of fish and makes it easy to enjoy almost any kind of seafood. Prepared by Sobeys and made by you, the Seafood Steamer is a delicious, no-stress meal solution.”

Sobeys is headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.

Price Chopper Supermarkets, Schenectady, N.Y., has offered a similar service, called create, take & bake Seafood Dinners, since 2013. Customers can choose from a selection of fish, vegetables and rubs and spices that are placed in a steamable pouch for at-home cooking.
