STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The new ShopRite, scheduled to open in Charleston in June, will include various amenities, such as a wellness center and a cafe.

According to Kevin Mannix, owner and operator of the new ShopRite, the store will include: A beauty adviser on-site; a dietitian; a satellite pizzeria run by local restaurant operator Reggiano's Brick Oven Pizza; a wellness center, and an in-store cafe.

South Shore community leaders learned about the supermarket during a special community luncheon this week at the CYO-MIV Community Center at Mount Loretto.

"Our staff will be ready and our programs will be exciting," Mannix said. "Our goals were to make the store functional and fun." He added that the store will employ close to 500 people.

Local artist Scott LoBaido has been commissioned to paint the American Flag at the entrance of the store.

Mannix said he expects to open the 70,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art supermarket at 3010 Veterans Road West next month, once power is hooked up at the site.

He said that bringing power to the site caused some unanticipated delays, but the grand opening is now expected to happen in mid- to late-June.

Borough President James Oddo credited Mannix with creating a supermarket filled with amenities and focused on health and wellness.

"It's a wonderful addition to our community," Oddo said. "They are a wonderful corporate citizen and partner, and we are really appreciative of that."

In 2012, the City Council unanimously approved a zoning amendment that allowed construction of the store next to the Bricktown Centre. The new ShopRite will be located nearby several big box retailers, including Target and Home Depot -- all easily accessible via the Korean War Veterans Parkway and Arthur Kill Road.

The Mannix family currently owns the two existing ShopRites in New Dorp and Graniteville.
