Giant Direct, located at 235 North Reservoir St. in Lancaster, was built on the site of a closed Giant supermarket.
To pick up online grocery orders, customers drive up to designated parking spots, and Giant Direct associates bring the items to their cars.
“This hub is going to allow us to continue to grow,” said Giant President Nick Bertram, adding that the chain saw double-digit e-commerce growth last year.
At 38,000 square feet, Giant Direct will provide the capacity to serve the three-county area “in a way that we haven’t been able to yet,” Giant President Nick Bertram said.
Shoppers order groceries for delivery or pickup via the retailer’s Peapod online service and app or the Giant website.
By providing another delivery point, Giant Direct will extend the grocer’s e-commerce reach deeper into greater Lancaster communities.
Long rows of cold cases house refrigerated and frozen items available for order.
The hub was developed with Peapod Digital Labs, the e-commerce services arm of Giant parent Ahold Delhaize USA.
Giant Direct associates pull products ordered online from rows of bar-coded shelves across the warehouse.
Lancaster residents near the site can walk up and order groceries directly inside a vestibule at the front of the facility.
Customers place orders using tablets mounted on a counter in the walk-up space.
Orders awaiting shopper pickup are held in a row of lockers for easy retrieval.
Bertram sends off the first delivery truck as part of the grand opening event.
At the opening ceremony, Giant Direct Manager Sean Michael announced, “I’m proud to come back to a community that we left back in 2017 and provide food and necessities, whether it’s by walking up or having it delivered.”
“Giant Direct will become our e-commerce brand as we go through the year,” Giant President Nick Bertram said.
