Sprouts reports 21% growth in plant-based alternatives

The company’s 2022 environmental report highlights sustainability progress

In 2022, specialty retailer Sprouts Farmers Market focused on sustainable and responsibly sourced products, eliminating waste and hunger, and reducing its carbon footprint and plastics, according to its latest environmental report. 

According to its latest environmental, social, and governance report, Sprouts has worked with third-party advisors over the last few years to accomplish its commitments. These advisors engaged with stakeholders on matters relevant to the business, including Sprouts' leadership, team members, investors, suppliers, non-governmental organizations, sustainability professionals, and academics. 

The third-party advisors also conducted a series of internal and external in-depth interviews with stakeholders to identify the most relevant topics for Sprouts. 

“Our success is rooted in our philosophy of ‘doing well by doing good’ which underscores the importance of operating our business in a way that demonstrates care for our team members, customers, communities, vendor partners, and the planet,” said Brandon Lombardi, chief sustainability officer of Sprouts Farmers Market.

Other report highlights from 2022 include: 

  • $3.2 billion in sales of products with a social or environmental attribute
  • 26% of organic products sold and plant-based alternatives sales grew 21%
  • Over $200 million in sales of products from minority- and women-owned businesses
  • Completed scope of three carbon emissions inventory
  • 32 million pounds of food donated, equating to 27 million meals, 45% of which was produce
  • 87% food waste recovery rate and 69% total landfill diversion rate
  • Committed to 100% reusable bags at checkout by the end of 2023
  • 2.5 million meat trays transitioned from polystyrene to recyclable PET trays

Sprouts was also focused on its employees, with 24% of team members promoted and 1,600 new jobs created through 16 new store openings. 

In addition, Lombardi noted that Sprouts received a AAA rating from Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) and was designated a “Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporation in the World” by the sustainable economy magazine Corporate Knights. 

Headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz., Sprouts employs approximately 31,000 employees and operates more than 380 stores in 23 states across the U.S.
