The National Grocers Association presented its 2014 Industry Service Award Tuesday night to Jay H. Campbell Jr., president and CEO of Associated Grocers, Baton Rouge, La.

The award, presented at the closing dinner of NGA's annual convention in Las Vegas, was given to Campbell for his years of service "that have contributed to better working relationships among retailers, wholesalers and their suppliers," Peter Larkin, NGA president and CEO, said. "Jay Campbell has dedicated his life to independent grocers for over 40 years, fueled by his faith in God, his faith in his retailers and his faith in his employees."

Campbell, who was surprised by the award, said it was difficult for him to express personal gratitude "because of the humbling nature of this type of recognition. It's something I'm not used to, and it's making me quite uncomfortable.

"But how could I receive recognition for doing what I enjoy doing, which is being of service to everyone else, which is what service to the independent retailer is all about?"
